Building The PM-Centric Organization

Introduction

Construction companies can offer IT sector firms valuable lessons for establishing a PM-centric organization.

Research Methods

Employees and board directors at four large, successful Australian construction companies with a reputation for consistently high project performance were interviewed. The researchers also sat as observers at meetings and compared interpretations with a consultancy team working with one of the companies.

Findings

Construction companies establish project management as the core of normal organizational functioning. They do this using a combination of individual and organizational-level capabilities that place the project manager at the point of convergence.

Recommendations

Align your organization's structures, management processes, roles, skills and culture to all focus on achieving exemplary project management.
