Introduction

Project sponsors play a pivotal role, both in influencing a project's success and overseeing its governance requirements.

Research

Researchers conducted 108 interviews relating to 36 projects in five different regions: Australia, China, Europe, North America and South Africa. They sought data that would define the project sponsor's true role.

Findings

An effective project sponsor will both support a project and manage its governance, acting as a bridge between the organization and the project. Project sponsors require experience, knowledge, perspective and authority. They must also be excellent communicators who are able to share their passion for the cause and, at the same time, handle ambiguity.

Recommendations

With the new emphasis on corporate and project governance, organizations must recognize that a successful project will require a strong sponsor who can both manage its governance and provide leadership and support.
