  • Customers of IT business projects are no longer satisfied with a project that comes in on time and on budget; they want added business value
  • They are looking to the project manager to deliver this value.

Research Methods

  • A survey of over 400 project managers was conducted in the UK
  • Interviews with over 40 senior PMs in the UK and North America

Findings

  • Senior PMs have redefined their roles and shifted focus from being fixed-goal oriented to being business-outcome driven.
  • They take increasing responsibility for post-implementation delivery of organizational change and benefits
  • They are building resilient project teams so they can concentrate on business issues.

Recommendations for PMs in critical projects

  • Expect and welcome changes to the project goals
  • Assume a more general manager leadership style - delegate and empower your team
  • Focus on the business outcomes and help the organization achieve them
